자화상
실레는 단명했지만 치열한 창작활동을 통해 뛰어난 작품을 많이 남겼습니다. 28살에 인플루엔자로 사망하기 전까지 그는 삼백 점 이상의 유화, 수천 점의 수채화와 소묘를 제작하였습니다. 힘찬 에너지로 표현된 인간 묘사는 그의 작품의 주된 주제였습니다. 1910년부터 1918년까지 실레가 제작한 많은 자화상은 자신의 정신 상태를 강하게 표현하고 있습니다. 1911년작인 이 자화상에서 실레는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 암시하는 포즈를 취하고 있는데 그의 헝클어진 머리카락은 곤두서 있고 눈은 미친듯이 응시하고 있습니다.
