소축제를 묘사하는 피치와이

피치와이는 천에 그린 대형 회화를 일컫는 것으로 보통 사원의 본존 뒤에 걸어둡니다. 17세기 크리슈나를 쉬리 나트지(어린왕)로서 숭배했던 발라바차랴파의 본존은 라자스탄 지방 우다이푸르 근처 나트드바라에서 모시고 있었습니다. 이 무렵 소수의 부유한 쉬리 나트지 신도들이 데칸 고원으로 이주하여 이 회화를 제작했을 것으로 추정하고 있습니다. 쪽빛으로 염색된 바탕에 금박과 은박을 풍부하게 사용한 것은 18세기 말 데칸 피치와이의 전형적인 양식입니다. 이 회화의 특이한 도상을 살펴보면 늦가을에 개최되는 소축제(고파쉬타미)를 위해 제작된 것으로 크리슈나가 소 관리인에서 목동으로 승격한 것을 축하하고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
