An Evening with Liu Wei: The Genesis Facade Commission

Join artist Liu Wei and Met curator Lesley Ma for a conversation about The Genesis Facade Commission: Liu Wei, Speculation, a suite of four large-scale sculptures for The Met Fifth Avenue’s facade. Using a variety of materials and remixing familiar motifs—fragments from the urban environment, historical sources, and bodily forms—Liu Wei invites contemplation, surprise, and revelation to pierce through our perceptions of reality with a blend of rawness and refinement. The conversation also delves into Liu Wei’s expansive career as a conceptual artist. Please note that this program includes interpretation from Mandarin Chinese into English.

Presented in conjunction with The Genesis Facade Commission: Liu Wei, Speculation.

Presented by Genesis.

Significant support is provided by the Director’s Fund, East West Bank, The Hazen Polsky Foundation, Zimo Zeng, and Lehmann Maupin.

An ornate blue mythical creature with sweeping wings, curled tail, and patterned feathers fills a worn gold manuscript page beside dark decorative letters.
This small plaque of Mark the Evangelist, represented by a lion holding a book between its wings, stands for many stories that illustrate facets of medieval Christian faith.
