Metropolitan Museum Adds New "Spring Break" Holiday to Roster of Met Holiday Mondays

Guitar Heroes and Other Special Exhibitions on View Monday, April 25

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has added a new Holiday Monday—designed to coincide with spring break—to its schedule. This year, Spring Break Met Holiday Monday will take place on April 25.

Met Holiday Mondays are extra public viewing days that take place on the Mondays of major holiday weeks or weekends, when historically the Museum has been closed. A different selection of exhibitions is open on each Met Holiday Monday. The Metropolitan's public cafeteria and several of the gift shops in the main building will be open on all of these special viewing days.

Metropolitan Museum President Emily K. Rafferty commented: "Met Holiday Mondays have been extremely popular since the program began in fall 2003. We are delighted to expand the program to include an additional day—the Monday that occurs during spring break—when many parents are looking for activities to take part in with their children, and older students are eager to sample the city's cultural offerings. Our permanent collection features masterpieces from all parts of the world and all periods of history—ancient to modern—and our ever-changing special exhibitions provide a more focused approach to particular topics. With hundreds of thousands of works of art on view at any one time, the Met truly offers something for everyone to enjoy."

Special exhibitions that will be available for viewing during spring break include: Guitar Heroes: Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York, a display of some 80 guitars and other stringed instruments that set the context for exemplary works by three New York master luthiers of Italian descent—John D'Angelico, James D'Aquisto, and John Monteleone (through July 4); Cézanne's Card Players, an exhibition that reunites for the first time the works from the artist's series of card player canvases and their associated oil studies and drawings (through May 8); and Rooms with a View: The Open Window in the 19th Century, a presentation of more than 60 oil paintings and works on paper from the Romantic era that feature interiors filled with a poetic play of light and silence (through July 4).

Charles H. Tally Holiday Monday Family Programs specially organized for spring break include discussion and sketching activities that will be available for families with children ages 5 through 12 at 11 a.m., 12 noon, 1:15 and 2:30 p.m. These programs are free with Museum admission.

The next Met Holiday Monday is Memorial Day (May 30).
