The Metropolitan Museum of Art Elects Maria Torres-Springer as Civic Trustee

(New York, September 25, 2025)—The Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today that it has elected Maria Torres-Springer as a Civic Trustee. The election took place at the September 25, 2025 meeting of the Board and was announced by Candace K. Beinecke and Hamilton (“Tony”) E. James, Co-Chairs of the Museum’s Board of Trustees.

“It is with great excitement that we welcome Maria to the board as a Civic Trustee,” said Board Co-Chairs Beinecke and James. “Maria’s seasoned experience as a public servant and dedication to the people of New York will bolster The Met’s role as an invaluable resource for the City and beyond.”

Maria Torres-Springer

Maria Torres-Springer is a nationally recognized public servant and urban policy leader with more than 25 years of experience across government, philanthropy, the private sector, and nonprofit leadership. Maria formerly served as New York City’s First Deputy Mayor where she oversaw the day-to-day operations of the City of New York and led landmark achievements in housing, workforce development, and other transformative projects across the five boroughs. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Ford Foundation and Senior Advisor for the Boston Consulting Group.

She has served on numerous boards and commissions, including the New York Public Library, Perelman Performing Arts Center, New York City Public Housing Authority, Trust for Cultural Resources for the City of New York, and the Harvard Kennedy School’s Visiting Committee.

Maria earned her bachelor's degree in ethics, politics, and economics from Yale University and a master’s in public policy from the Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
