(New York, May 27, 2025)—The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced today that Sarah Jones has been appointed as as Lulu C. and Anthony W. Wang Head of Live Arts. Jones most recently served as Chief of Staff and Director of Public Programs at Gagosian, where she established and led the gallery’s department overseeing global public programming and performance commissions. She will begin her role at The Met on August 18, reporting to Inka Drögemüller, Deputy Director of Audience Engagement.
“We are delighted to welcome Sarah Jones as as Lulu C. and Anthony W. Wang Head of Live Arts at The Met,” said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and CEO. “Sarah brings extensive experience in enhancing audience engagement through dynamic performances and public events, collaborating with artists to develop thoughtful programs. We look forward to her leadership in shaping meaningful initiatives that engage with the Museum’s collection and advance its mission.”
As Lulu C. and Anthony W. Wang Head of Live Arts, Sarah Jones will oversee the Department and its programming, which promotes and presents new works of performance, including music, movement, sound, related hybrids, and site-specific commissions. She will also work closely with partners across the Museum to support the mission of fostering appreciation and understanding of art by closely connecting performance to the Museum’s collection and exhibitions.
Jones has been at Gagosian since 2010, where she shaped the gallery’s public-facing initiatives. Her contributions span performance commissions, artist relations, public programming, operations, and strategy. She co-conceived Gagosian Premieres, a series of short-form films each developed in partnership with artists such as Jenny Saville, Anselm Kiefer, and Nathaniel Mary Quinn, in 2020, and worked on the launch of Gagosian Sessions, a digital series spotlighting performance-based works. In her capacity as Director of Public Programs, Sarah produced a wide-ranging slate of performances and public events across the gallery’s international footprint, in collaboration with an esteemed roster of artists and performers.
Jones commented: “I am deeply honored to join The Met at such a pivotal moment in its history. With its phenomenal foundation in live arts commissions and productions, the museum is uniquely positioned to lead how institutions engage with performing arts. I look forward to collaborating across The Met and contributing to a vision that explores what performance can be within the Museum context—expanding artistic boundaries, deepening audience engagement, and affirming the essential role of live arts in our collective experience.”
Jones is President of the Board of Directors at The Kitchen, sits on the Board of ISCP, and is in Performance Space New York’s Visionary Circle. She is also a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. She holds an M.A. in Fine and Decorative Art from Sotheby’s Institute, London and a B.A. in Art History from Sewanee: the University of the South.
