Battle of the Legends Vogueing Competition Will Highlight Pride Month Celebrations at The Met

Vogueing

(New York, May 14, 2019)—In celebration of The Costume Institute exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion, on view at The Met Fifth Avenue through September 8, 2019, and in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host a series of events, performances, discussions, and workshops.

The highlight of The Met's Pride festivities is a vogueing competition staged on The Met's iconic plaza and front steps featuring some of ballroom's fiercest competitors. On June 11, during Museum Mile, from 6:30 to 7 p.m., Battle of the Legends: Vogueing at The Met invites six competitors—Asia Balenciaga, Bootz Prodigy, Dashaun Lanvin, Omari Mizrahi, Tamiyah Mugler, and Ty Ebony—to perform. Jack Mizrahi, ballroom scene notable and co-founder of House of Mizrahi, chose the participants. Competition judges will include Twiggy Garcon, executive producer of KikiJordan Roth, president of Jujamcyn Theaters; Jose Xtravaganza, Father of the House of Xtravaganza; and Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of Vogue and Artistic Director of Condé Nast. The performances will culminate in the selection of a crowd favorite and a grand prize winner—the "Legend Slayer."

Battle of the Legends: Vogueing at The Met is made possible by Jordan Roth.

Museum Mile Festival at The Met is made possible by the E.H.A. Foundation and Tiger Baron Foundation.

Pride month at The Met will also include a June 23 Sunday at The Met conversation between Billy Porter, star of the hit TV show Pose, and madison moore, cultural critic, DJ, and Assistant Professor of Queer Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Porter and Moore will discuss the exhibition Camp: Notes on Fashion, the concept of camp in performance, and the impact of ballroom style on pop culture and high fashion. Sunday at The Met takes place in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium.

On June 21, 2019 from 5 to 9 p.m. MetFridays: PRIDE will recognize this historic event and recent civil rights victories through the lens of The Met's collection. The event will feature a variety of in-gallery talks by Met curators as well as special appearances by Jack Mizrahi, Sinia Alaia, and sexuality educator Ericka Hart; and a vogueing workshop with Shy Ebony and Malik Mugler. Opportunities to make art will include workshops by artists Louis Fratino and Vincent Chong, and a Drag and Draw session with guest models Daphne Always and Lady Quesa'Dilla.
