On September 1, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will welcome 62 fellows to take part in The Met’s 2021–2022 Fellowship Program. Together, this group of 21 postdoctoral and 41 predoctoral scholars joins the Museum from 16 countries, including Australia, China, Egypt, Hungary, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Namibia, Peru, Romania, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Over the course of their twelve-month residencies, these scholars will be given exceptional access to the Museum’s renowned staff, libraries, collections, research facilities, and research laboratories. In addition, they will be given the time and financial support necessary to complete their book manuscripts, doctoral dissertations, scholarly articles, conservation training, analytical experiments, and other academic pursuits. Working across the fields of art history, anthropology, critical theory, philosophy, museum studies, historiography, conservation, and the material sciences, each fellow is paired with a supervisor in their host department with whom they will confer, collaborate, and otherwise take advantage of available Museum resources.
The fellows’ research projects this year comprise a vast array of subjects, including a capacious look at the life and work of late fashion designer Patrick Kelly, an in-depth study of the ethical and transformative possibilities of Perso-Islamic illustrated manuscripts, and an exploration of self-fashioning among enslaved peoples as a profoundly political act of self-affirmation. In addition, several individuals have been specifically invited to contribute to Museum-directed projects, including a comprehensive reinstallation of the Museum’s approximately 4,000 works of art from the Andean region of South America, a complete reassessment of the collection of African arts spanning from 500 B.C. to the present, the evaluation and cataloging of The Met's extensive holdings of medieval ivory carvings, and a substantial contribution of research to an upcoming major exhibition focused on ancient Egypt.
Director Max Hollein and the Museum’s Grants Committee are likewise thrilled to announce three individuals have been selected for the inaugural Interdisciplinary Fellowship. Integrating cross-departmental projects that explore connections between various cultures and collections in the Museum, the 2021–2022 Interdisciplinary Fellows will move beyond the traditional boundaries of the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts to explore a range of projects relevant to this moment. Respectively, these three projects will seek to place postcolonial scholarship in dialogue with contemporary art practice as a means of unsettling settler colonialism; weave together analyses of French 19th-century spectatorship practices with Caribbean theories of anti-colonialism; and investigate the longevity of patterns in Levantine decorative arts as evidenced among modern Palestinian communities.
A Met fellowship allows scholars from around the world opportunities to immerse themselves in a curatorial, conservation, education, or scientific research department at the Museum. Drawing on the particular strengths, resources, and expertise of their host departments, fellows use the Museum as a vibrant space for dedicated research, professional development, and the dynamic exchange of ideas. During their yearlong terms, Fellows have unique access to the Museum's inner workings and are fully integrated into the life of The Met.
Additional details about current and former fellows, including their fellowship projects, institutional affiliations, and areas of study, can be found on The Met’s website: metmuseum.org/about-the-met/fellowships/current-and-former-fellows.
