Cut-Out

Man Ray American
1915
Not on view
Man Ray included this work, originally called Study in Two Dimensions, in his first solo exhibition, at the Daniel Gallery in New York. Focused on the idea of containing three dimensions within a two-dimensional plane, he cut and removed the left and right sides of the composition. Space is claimed and compressed within its pictorial plane. The work is both painting and sculpture, flat and dimensional, static and dynamic.
