Trans Atlantique
In 1921, when Man Ray left New York for Paris, he expressed his relocation in the form of a game. At the top of this assemblage is a photograph known as New York 1920 that documents the contents of an upturned ashtray knocked across the floor of the artist’s studio. Below is a well-worn map that details the area where Man Ray first landed in Paris, at the Hôtel des Boulainvilliers (its location is just beyond the map’s top edge). The collaged elements mark a physical beginning and end, and the checkered pattern plots the journey as if moves on a game board.
