Copyist Program

Set up your studio at The Met. The Copyist Program offers time and space for artists to develop their own interpretation of an artwork through intimate study in the Museum's galleries. Copyists have created reinterpretations of original artworks in The Met collection since 1872. The program celebrates intensive technical study, deep observation, and encourages sustained engagement with a diverse range of media, including, but not limited to, drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Note: Visitors may sketch in the galleries at any time using pencil only. If you are interested in learning more, please see our visitor guidelines.

Artists interested in working in the galleries may apply to participate in a free, eight-week session during the spring (March through May) or fall (September through December). We accept online applications only. Please read the Copyist Program Terms and Conditions (PDF) and Guidelines for Requesting a Work of Art to Copy (PDF) before applying.

University, college, and atelier groups are welcome on a case-by-case basis depending on availability and should email creativepractice@metmuseum.org for the link to apply. For more information or questions not addressed in the application materials, email creativepractice@metmuseum.org.

Process and Selection

Applications are evaluated according to a set rubric (PDF) based on the following criteria: the applicant’s clarity of purpose, work samples, potential to contribute a fresh perspective, and the feasibility of their project.
