Curator Talk—Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy

Hear from curators of the exhibition Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy to explore notions of “the East” in nineteenth century art, when globalism, shaped by colonialism and imperialism, fueled unprecedented encounters, connections, and exchanges in Europe and the Middle East. Gain a deeper understanding of how Islamic works of art made their way to European dealers, collectors, international expositions, and museums, introducing a new visual language to artists, architects, and designers. Take a closer look at featured exhibition objects from twelve Met departments along with rarely seen loans from the U.S. and abroad, spanning from easel paintings to drawings, photographs, illustrated books, architecture, arms and armor, textiles, garments, glassware, ceramics, and metalwork.

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy.
