  • Chariot Mount with Three Figures, 300–500
Late Roman or Byzantine; Probably made in Gaul
    Copper alloy; 7 15/16 x 7 3/16 x 2 1/8 in. (20.2 x 18.2 x 5.4 cm)
    Fletcher Fund, 1947 (47.100.42)

The men who adorn this chariot mount are probably two orators and a grammarian, as suggested by their gestures and by the scrolls and writing tablets they hold. The piece may have been used to decorate the chariot of a distinguished orator in Gaul.
