J.S. Bach: Cello Suite No. 1 in G major | MetLiveArts

In 2023, violinist Johnny Gandelsman realized a longtime dream: performing J.S. Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, plus novel arrangements of the composer’s six cello suites, over a weeklong residency at The Met Cloisters. Through four consecutive nights in the resplendent Fuentidueña Chapel, Gandelsman paved a memorable journey through the behemoth pieces, infusing his own, folk-rooted voice through what he considers “some of Bach’s most personal and joyful works.”

Recorded on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, in Fuentidueña Chapel at The Met Cloisters.

This performance was made possible by the Grace Jarcho Ross and Daniel G. Ross Concert Fund.
