This fragment is part of a large procession of gods and goddesses that covered all four walls of the square antechamber of the pyramid temple of Senwosret I. Interior relief in Egyptian temples is generally raised, but for some unknown reason, Senwosret I's artists used sunken relief in several of the temple's rooms.
