Cosmetic Spoon in the Shape of a Mouse

New Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 117

This cosmetic spoon is a fine representation of a crouching mouse. The artist, working with a very thin piece of bone, has created the illusion of a sculpture in the round. The spoon side clearly represents the right side of the mouse, while the back of the spoon is the animal's left side. Another cosmetic spoon in the collection (10.130.2520) represents a dog in a similar fashion.
