Evening shoes

Manufacturer Charles Strohbeck, Inc. American

Not on view

As previously important local industries gradually disappear from our cities and are forgotten, preserved objects stand witness to that history. This pair of modish T-strap shoes shows a mid-range product from the once prosperous Brooklyn shoe industry. Brooklyn was an important center of fashionable shoe production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and high fashion shoes were known generically in the industry as "Brooklyn shoes." This unworn manufacturer's specimen clearly illustrates the extreme toe and distorted sole shape of 1918-1922. The figured fabric upper is also of interest, as it would be considerably trendier and less versatile than a solid fabric.
