Madonna and Child

Attributed to Giovanni Maria Morlaiter Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 552

Mary, mother of Christ in the Christian tradtion, strides forward presenting the baby Jesus, whose hand is raised in blessing. The delicate features and animate gestures of the sacred figures them into the living realm. Mary’s ample drapery is characteristic of Venetian baroque art, which lasted well into the eighteenth century.
