Pietà (Lamentation)

French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 306

In this lamentation scene, Saint John and Mary Magdalene mourn with the Virgin Mary over the crucified Christ.

Italian Renaissance aesethics of anatomical definition and idealized facial expression are combined with late gothic drapery patterning. A painted landscape, probably of the Cross on Golgotha, originally decorated the background.
