Rooftops of Paris

Leon Kroll American

Not on view

This composition is unusual for Kroll, who is best known for rendering heroic figures in landscape settings. The painting calls attention to the city’s eclectic skyline, particularly the distinctive, steeply pitched mansard rooflines. Paris’s architecture and variable weather conditions provided many opportunities for Kroll to vary his brushwork, which ranges from loose to structured. The presence of the tower of Saint-Germain-des-Prés near the composition’s center places the scene in or near the city’s sixth arrondissement; the facade of Notre Dame and scallop domes of Sacré-Coeur basilica appear farther in the distance.
