Enanga (Zither)

Kwere peoples

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

Found in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, the enanga has one continuous string that is stretched back and forth across the trough-shaped body. In areas west of Lake Tanganyika, a gourd resonator is used. Positioned on the player’s lap, it accompanies sung histories and local or personal stories.
