Libation jar

Old Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 103

In the latter part of the Old Kingdom artisans crafted tall, slender stone vases modeled after pottery and metal prototypes. The broad-shouldered vase tapering to a narrow foot is in the form of the traditional hes vase from which libations were poured during temple and funerary rituals.
