Two Fan Designs: Plum Blossom and Wave

Totoya Hokkei Japanese

Edo period (1615–1868)

Not on view

On each sheet in this set are two fans set against a decorative river motif in deep blue embossed with silver that is contiguous across all five prints in this pentaptych. The red color of the wave in the top fan indicates the title of this design; others in the group are blue, yellow, white, and black. The motif of floating fans comes from the Muromachi period (1392–1568).
