Lamp with Athena-Neith

Roman Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 137

Images created in terracotta were popular in domestic and funerary contexts. Athena-Neith is often depicted on lamps and lanterns. The association of the goddess with light is noted already in the fifth century BC by Herodotus who reports a nocturnal festival of lights in honor of Neith.
