Jar with Cartouches of Merneptah

New Kingdom, Ramesside

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 124

The handles of this jar are in the shape of ibex heads. It was one of thirteen similar vases found outside the tomb of Merneptah in the Valley of the Kings; some bore the name of Ramesses III and others that of his successor Merneptah. A hieratic notation on the neck of this vase gives its capacity as 22 hin.
