Object bearing the cartouche of Ramesses II, possibly from a colossal statue

New Kingdom, Ramesside

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 122

Resembling the cylindrical object (perhaps a rolled cloth) often held in the fists of statues of kings or the elite, this object is thought to come from a temple at either Luxor or Karnak, both cult centers for the god Amun on the east bank at Thebes. On the flat surface is the throne name of Ramesses II (Usermaatre setepenre) enclosed in a cartouche. Although this may once have been part of a colossal statue, the back end of the stone appears to have been rounded, suggesting that it may instead have been a free-standing object.
