Scarab Inscribed with the Name of Amun and Goose

New Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 130

The sun god Amun could appear in many forms other than his anthropomorphic appearance; the goose is one of the animals referring to the sun god. The accompanying hieroglyphs form the divine epithet ‘Perfect of Life’ and Amun’s name is written above the back of the bird. By having the sun god’s name written on a seal-amulet, the owner of the scarab called upon Amun’s support and protection.
