Model of a House

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

Among the objects associated with Middle Kingdom private burials are pottery architectural miniatures, discovered just under the sand, whose main feature is an open courtyard, often with a porch. Particularly well known are the models excavated by W. M. Flinders Petrie in the cemetery of el-Rifa near Asyut. This elaborate example represents a two-story building with an empty chair on the second floor and a bed under the porch, items that hint at the presence of the house owner.
