Magical Figure of a Nubian Prisoner

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

Figures like this representing a kneeling man with bound arms have been found in deposits close to the walls of the Egyptian fortress at Mirgissa in the Second Cataract area of the Upper Nile. Inscribed with magic formulas, they added supernatural force to the strength of the military as it defended the frontier of Egypt’s Nubian territory. This figure can be identified as a representation of a Nubian based on his ear ornament.
