Upper Part of a Statue of a Thirteenth Dynasty King Seated

Middle Kingdom

Not on view

This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.

On stylistic grounds, this image can be fairly certainly ascribed to Khasekhemre Neferhotep I, or possibly one of his immediate predecessors. In notable contrast to the animated late Twelfth Dynasty royal images, this ageless face is dominated by smooth cheeks and endowed with a somber, somewhat withdrawn expression, traits that are typical of mid-Thirteenth Dynasty royal images. Objects with Neferhotep’s name have been found from Nubia to Byblos, and he is known to have presided at the Osiris festival in Abydos.
