The Comtesse de Clermont-Tonnerre as a Sultana

Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun French

Not on view

A contemporary described the comtesse de Clermont-Tonnerre (1766–1832) as a woman of "lively intelligence" and "sparkling originality." With a flurry of dazzling brushwork, the artist portrays her in a fanciful Turkish costume. Her kaftan is lined in ermine with black tail tips. A string of pearls suggests Turkish prayer beads.
