Broadsheets and royal almanac prints such as this one were used to publicize the Siamese mission to Versailles of 1686. Cartouches bordering the central audience scene illustrate episodes from this diplomatic visit, including the dinner hosted for the embassy at Versailles and the introduction of their elephants to the Menagerie. Visible at right is a miniature processional throne, which was used to carry the Siamese king’s letter. A collection of valuable metal gifts, including a pair of silver inlaid cannons, appears in the foreground.
