View of the Château de Versailles and the Orangerie

Attributed to Etienne Allegrain French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

Allegrain chose to accentuate the monumentality of one of the two staircases known as the Cent Marches (One Hundred Steps), enlivening his scene with strolling figures, including five dressed in Persian costumes. Using the sloping site to best advantage, the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart built the staircases between 1684 and 1686 during the creation of the north–south axis of the Versailles gardens.
