The King Promising to Come to Paris with His Family (October 6, 1789)

Jean Louis Prieur le Jeune French

Not on view

This drawing shows troops enveloped by smoke from their artillery salvo, set against the seemingly peaceful backdrop of Versailles. Early on October 6, the French National Guard tried to reestablish order at the palace. Having waited all night for concessions by the king, a group of rebels forced their way into the queen’s apartment; she fled as two of her guards were killed. After a brief calm, the crowd assembled in the courtyard and demanded the return of the king to Paris.
