Louis XIV Receiving the Persian Ambassador Muhammad Reza Beg

Attributed to Nicolas de Largillierre (or Largillière) French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

The reception of the Persian ambassador, Muhammad Reza Beg, was the last major diplomatic visit of Louis XIV’s reign. The formal audience took place in the Hall of Mirrors, with the throne placed on a raised platform surmounted by a canopy. Courtiers stood crowded on risers running the length of the hall. The king wore a suit so weighted down by precious gems that he had to change after dinner.
