View of the Hall of Mirrors

Sébastien Leclerc I French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

This is a rare view of the Hall of Mirrors while it was still being decorated. The ceiling here represents an unrealized design by Charles Le Brun on the theme of the god Apollo. Courtiers and visitors walk through the Grande Galerie admiring the vault and the famous silver furniture, most of which was melted down in 1689. The table in the foreground, made by the goldsmith Claude Ballin in 1672, incorporates in its design the "four parts of the world" and cupids riding dolphins.
