Louis XIV Receiving the Marquis de Dangeau’s Oath

Antoine Pezy French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

Louis XIV entrusted one of his favorite courtiers with the office of Grandmaster of the United Orders of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. On December 18, 1695, the kneeling Philippe de Courcillon, marquis de Dangeau, draped in the great cloak of the order, took an oath before the king (also shown kneeling). This and other ceremonies in the chapel at Versailles were regarded as splendid opportunities for witnessing the pageantry of the court.
