Louis XV Departing for the Hunt

Attributed to Pierre-Denis Martin le Jeune French

Not on view

Louis XV, accompanied by his retinue and a pack of hounds, departs for a hunting expedition. Riding a white stallion in the foreground, the king is set against a perspective view of the palace and gardens at Versailles. The painter rendered the Orangerie, flanked by the staircases known as the Cent Marches (One Hundred Steps), as well as the body of water constructed by the Swiss Guards and known therefore as the Swiss Lake. A passionate hunter, the king frequently could be seen departing on horseback to indulge in his favorite pastime.
