Processional Miniature Throne (Busabok)

Thai, Bangkok

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

This busabok, which houses a chair resembling a Siamese coronation throne, sanctified the objects it contained during state and religious processions. The personal message sent by the Siamese monarch, Phra Narai, to Louis XIV was engraved on gold sheet, placed in a busabok like this one, and carried on a palanquin to the Hall of Mirrors. According to the king’s wishes, some fifteen hundred members of the French court, arranged according to rank, attended the ceremony.
