Vase depicting the Calydonian boar hunt (one of a pair)

Guillaume Boichot French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 552

The reliefs surrounding this pair of vases portray episodes in the legend of the Greek hero Meleager. On the vase at left, Meleager and the huntress Atalanta embark to slay the ferocious Calydonian boar. The vase on the right depicts the hunt’s triumphant aftermath, in which Meleager presents Atalanta with the beast’s head.
