Folding Screen

Charles Cozette

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

This impressive view of Versailles, its forecourts teeming with life, would have greeted visitors once they reached the Place d’Armes (Parade Grounds) in front of the palace. Originally a painted wall hanging, this work, together with depictions of other French royal châteaux, may have decorated the French ambassador’s residence in The Hague (damaged by fire in 1782) before being transformed into a screen.
