Funerary Mask

Malagana

Not on view

This mask—a circular face with two tabbed extensions on either side and two plaques covering the cutout eye holes—features a naturalistic nose, stylized brows, and a grimacing rectangular mouth full of teeth. Perforations along the jawline, on the outer tabs, and on the hairline indicate that the mask was likely affixed to a backing, perhaps of textile or wood.
