Pectoral

Malagana

Not on view

In addition to a funerary mask, ear ornaments, and a diadem, high-status individuals at Malagana were buried with arm ornaments in the shape of tweezers, which fuse a stylized face with a crab-like silhouette. The smaller tweezers, possibly used as a ritual implement rather than an arm ornament, features two stacked frontal faces framed by creatures. The V-shaped breastplate is an abstract representation of a bat; the larger pectoral may represent another flying creature—the long, flared extension suggests the tail fan of a bird.
