Pot

Unrecorded Santa Clara Pueblo artist

Not on view

Black pottery has been made at Santa Clara Pueblo for generations. The elegant shape of this pot, with its high neck and turned rim, is characteristic of Santa Clara pottery, as is the high luster of the polished black surface. Beginning in the late 1800s, potters at the pueblo made many black pieces, similar to the one shown here, for tourists and nearby households in Santa Fe and Española.
