New Maps of the Town, Palace, and Gardens of Versailles

Franz Anton Danreiter Austrian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 899

Danreiter, master gardener of the prince- archbishops of Salzburg, made detailed drawings of the gardens at Versailles during a stay there. Alternating with maps, profiles, and elevations of complete buildings, the picturesque views in his album are enlivened with strollers, courtiers, servants, gardeners, and animals. The album functions as the testimony of a privileged visitor whose trained eye took in all the technical and aesthetic aspects of Versailles.

New Maps of the Town, Palace, and Gardens of Versailles, Franz Anton Danreiter (Salzburg, ca. 1695–1760), Graphite, pen and black ink, gray wash, watercolor on ribbed paper with watermark; decorated cardboard and paper at bottom board; remains of gilding on edges
