Iridescent marine shell was collected and traded across Mesoamerica as early as the second millennium B.C. The shell of the earflares is from the Pacific coast, far from where the piece was discovered at a site with evidence of the intersection of Olmec and Maya cultures.




Desde el segundo milenio a. C., las conchas marinas tornasoladas tan preciadas por las antiguas culturas de Mesoamérica eran recogidas e intercambiadas a través de grandes distancias.Estas delicadas conchas en forma de serpiente formaban parte de un conjunto de orejeras. La concha proviene de la costa Pacífica, lejos de donde la pieza fue descubierta, en Chiapa de Corzo, un sitio donde hay evidencia tanto de la cultura Olmeca como de la cultura Maya.
