Hercules

Attributed to Willem Danielsz van Tetrode Netherlandish

Not on view

During his twenty years in Italy, Tetrode developed a specialty in making bronze statuettes after ancient sculptures. Inspired by a colossal classical marble Hercules in Rome, this work is the only terracotta attributed to the Dutch artist. Vigorously modeled in wet clay, which was then fired and painted, the figure displays a striking application of naturalistic color that reflects the northern European realist tradition.
