Salzedo Model Pedal Harp

Lyon & Healy American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 684

This Lyon & Healy professional-model harp bears the name of Carlos Salzedo, the celebrated performer, composer, and pedagogue who set standards for modern virtuoso harp playing. His keen perception of visual aesthetics was evident in his playing technique, which emphasized graceful body movements, and in the striking Art Deco styling of this harp. Salzedo designed the instrument in collaboration with painter and illustrator Witold Gordon, who is noted for his murals at Radio City Music Hall. This instrument was owned by Cynthia Otis, a student of Salzedo and harpist with the New York City Ballet for forty-two years. -Bradley Strauchen-Scherer
