Uttara Rama Charitra, The Assembly of Rama

India

Not on view

Rama is depicted enthroned at the court of his capital Ayodhya, accompanied by his wife Sita and his three brothers, all regally attired. Attendant before the ensemble is Hanuman, Rama’s devout monkey-general, and the court priest Vashista. This scene, from the concluding section of the Ramayana epic, was a highly popular subject that was revisited by a number of publishing presses. Like many of the chromolithographic prints produced under Ravi Varma’s direction, this composition is modeled after one of the artist’s oil paintings.
