“Woman” Flower Basket (Hanaire)

Nagakura Ken'ichi Japanese

Not on view

This tall, narrow vessel retains the function of a flower basket but displays an abstract form inspired by a standing female figure. Its fine plaiting combined with unusual texture, and its asymmetrical surface reflect the influence of twentieth-century Western sculptors like Picasso, Brancusi, Henry Moore, and Jean Arp.
